Sexually Transmitted Infections/ Reproductive Tract Infections(STI/RTI) rank among the priority health concern for which sexually active adults seek health care in developing countries. Control of STI/RTI is a strong and effective strategy for reducing and preventing transmission of HIV. STI/RTI prevention, control and surveillance are important components of National AIDS Control Program (NACP) III & IV. The STD Regional Reference Laboratory under NACO/WBSAC&PS forms an integral part in laboratory detection of different STI/RTI and also undertakes development of manpower by imparting training facilities. The Laboratory also undertakes Research work as a part of STD Prevention and Control program. The different tests performed in this centre are Culture and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing, Serological tests for Syphilis, ELISA tests for other micro-organisms causing STI/RTI, PAP Smear etc. This laboratory takes part in the External Quality Assessment Scheme for GASP EQAS Series conducted by Apex Regional STD Teaching, Training and Research Centre, WHO GASP SEAR Regional Reference Laboratory, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.
